  • Provide funding to help graduate students offset costs of attending conferences
  • Form committees, which give us a strong voice in the various aspects of the department and campus-wide GSA

Thursday, August 28th 2008; 11:00PM

The Computer Science and Engineering Graduate Student Association (CSEGSA) will hold its first meeting of the semester on Tuesday, September 2nd at 5:00pm in 242 Bell Hall. All CSE graduate students are welcomed to attend. I encourage all incoming students to come and find out what our club is all about. The purpose of the meeting is to get to know one another and elect this year's officers. FREE pizza and pop will be provided! The meeting agenda will include the following:

  • Election of officers and senators
  • Ideas for student-faculty interaction (social and professional)
  • Announcements of upcoming CSEGSA and GSA events/opportunities

For those of you not familiar with our organization, I invite you to check out the CSEGSA web site. Feel free to subscribe to our RSS feed and event calendar to stay up-to-date on current events.

Again, I encourage everyone to attend. Our organization provides a great way to get involved in the department, meet new people, and gain useful experience desirable to future employers.

The Computer Science and Engineering Graduate Student Association (CSEGSA) will hold its final meeting of the semester on Tuesday, April 29th at 12:00pm. The meeting will be held in the conference room located in the Commons Research Area. Please e-mail if you don't know where this is. Pizza and pop will be provided!

The meeting will mainly serve to finalize our budget and discuss any remaining issues. This will also be your last chance to make a conference funding request. Please see the details at the funding page. We will take any requests up until the meeting. The meeting agenda will include the following items:

Saturday, April 19th 2008; 11:00PM

The annual CSEGSA bowling party will be held on Tuesday, April 22nd at 7:00 PM at Transit Lanes. Free bowling, food and drinks will be provided. This is a great opportunity to relax for a few hours and socialize with the CSE community.

We will also be giving away free t-shirts, rubik's cubes, and more. There are a limited number of tickets available. To sign up, see Liz Lesny in 233 Bell Hall. We are collecting a $3.00 deposit with each reservation. The deposit will be returned at the bowling alley. Please bring exact change when you come to sign up - Liz does not have a cash register in her office!

The CSEGSA will hold elections for the 2008-2009 Executive Committee (e-board) within the next month and is looking for candidates to run for the following offices:

  • President
  • Vice President
  • Treasurer
  • Secretary

Descriptions of duties for each office can be found in the CSEGSA constitution. Holding an office serves as an excellent opportunity for you to hone your leadership skills, participate in the activities of the department, and show to a potential employer your ability to handle responsibility.

Thursday, January 31st 2008; 9:00PM

The Computer Science and Engineering Graduate Student Association (CSEGSA) would like to announce that the 21st Annual CSE Graduate Research Conference will be held on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at the Center for Tomorrow. This year we have have lined up Bloomberg as one of our sponsors. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and the Graduate Student Association (GSA) are also sponsoring the event. Other sponsors may be added later. The conference web site can be found here.

We encourage all students to submit a 2-page extended abstract by February, 25, 2008. Submission details can be found in the call for papers.

Monetary prizes will be awarded for the best papers and best posters. All accepted participants and sponsors will be invited to attend a banquet immediately following the conference. Further details will be available at a later date.

This conference provides an excellent opportunity to present your work and network with potential employers. CSE graduate classes will be canceled on the day of the conference. Whether you intend to make a submission or to simply attend, please register for the conference at the web site.

The Computer Science and Engineering Graduate Student Association (CSEGSA) will be hosting an informal discussion pertaining to graduate student interests and concerns in the CSE department. Dr. Bharat Jayaraman (Department Chair) and Dr. Jan Chomicki (Graduate Studies Director) will be present to address our concerns.

The discussion will take place this Thursday, January 31st at 4:00pm in 224 Bell Hall. All CSE grad students are invited to join in this dialog with the department.

Friday, November 9th 2007; 12:30AM

The CSEGSA is conducting a survey in order to determine what electronic communication technology is used or preferred by CSE graduate students. The results will be used to help the department better meet the needs of us grad students. Please take a couple minutes to fill out the survey. The survey can be found here.

Once you have completed the survey, you must acknowledge your participation using the link provided in a confirmation e-mail. Otherwise, your answers will not be considered. The confirmation e-mail will be sent to your CSE account.

Additionally, one participant will be chosen at random to receive a free pass to LaserTron for their choice of laser tag, go-kart racing, or cyber sport.

The survey closes on Friday, November 16th at 11:59pm.

The Computer Science and Engineering Graduate Student Association (CSEGSA) is looking for a volunteer to serve as a student representative on the department's Graduate Studies Committee. This committee is responsible for establishing graduate degree requirements, graduate course offerings and content, and other related matters.

Any interested students should send e-mail to with the following information:

  • Name
  • Expected degree (M.S. or Ph.D.)
  • Years within the department
  • Advisor

In order to be eligible for the committee, you must be available to meet every other Tuesday from 3:30pm to 5:00pm starting October 2nd. It is important that we as students are represented on this committee as its decisions affect all of us. I hope to hear from some willing to volunteer.
